Physics

Physics is a popular choice at 'AS' and 'A2' levels with there usually being two sets in Years 12 and 13. The courses are based on the AQA Specifications and these, together with past papers and markschemes, are available on the AQA website.

Many students go on to use their knowledge of Physics in careers in Industry, Research, Computing, Engineering and allied areas.

AS course structure

There are three modules:

  • 'Particles, Radiation and Quantum Phenomena'
  • 'Mechanics and Molecular Kinetic Theory'
  • 'Current Electricity and Elastic Properties of Solids'

AS Physics is assessed by means of three module tests which are sat during May/June of Year 12. 15% of the total mark is awarded internally on a student's ability to plan and implement an investigation, and analyse and evaluate the results obtained.

A2 course structure

There are three modules:

  • 'Waves, Fields and Nuclear Energy'
  • 'Nuclear Instability'
  • 'Turning Points in Physics'

A2 Physics is assessed by means of three examinations, including a synoptic unit, which are sat during May/June of Year 13. 12.5% of the total mark for (AS + A2) is based on internally assessed practical work.
