Chemistry

Chemistry is a popular choice at 'AS' and 'A2' levels with there usually being two sets in Years 12 and 13. The courses are based on the AQA Specifications and these, together with past papers and markschemes, are available on the AQA website.

Many students go on to use their knowledge of Chemistry in careers in Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy and Dentistry.

AS course structure

There are three modules:

  • 'Atomic structure, Bonding and Periodicity'
  • ‘Foundation Physical and Inorganic Chemistry'
  • 'Introduction to Organic Chemistry'

AS Chemistry is assessed by means of three module tests which are sat in June of Year 12. In addition students also take a practical examination as part of module 3 in May.

A2 course structure

There are three modules:

  • 'Further Physical and Organic Chemistry'
  • 'Thermodynamics and Further Inorganic Chemistry'
  • 'Synoptic Assessment'

A2 Chemistry is assessed by means of three examinations in June of Year 13. In addition to these modules, students sit a practical examination as part of module 6 in May of Year 13.
